Why does MichCon read my meter?

Alpena Power Company, MichCon and EarthTech have joined together in an effort to maximize efficiencies and reduce costs for all companies. In areas where the service territories of these companies overlap, only one meter reader (MichCon) visits the account each month and reads all meters at that location. This eliminates the need for up to three different meter readers going to each location at different times of the month. After the reads are taken, the computer system transfers the appropriate reads to each company for billing. Alpena Power employees still read approximately 30% of our meters. Alpena Power has found that joint meter reading maximizes the efficiency of the meter readers, reduces costs and decreases our frequency of estimated meter reads.

How often do you estimate meters?

APC does try to obtain monthly meter readings. If your meter is estimated it may be due to inclement weather or lack of access to the meter.

What are the interest rates on Energy Thrift Certificates?

ETC are available only to Michigan residents. Energy Thrift Certificate Interest Rates are subject to change and published bi-weekly in the Alpena News and are available from the Business Office by calling 989-358-4960.

What part of my electrical service am I responsible for?

The customer is responsible for installing the meter socket and either a 10 foot mast with wires in it for us to connect to at the weatherhead (for overhead services) or the meter socket and a drop pipe and sweep out of the bottom of the socket (for underground services). We have a standard service drawing in Engineering that we give to any customers that need it. Local electricians that know our standards, construct most new services but, occasionally we get a property owner that wants to do it themselves.

Do I need an inspection before my meter will be turned on?

Yes, you have to have an inspection for any new service before we will turn it on and existing ones off more than 60 days are required to have one as well.

If I need power installed on my property, how much will it cost?

You would need to have a field engineer come to the location to determine those charges. Please call the APC Engineering Department at 989-358-4948.
