Lineworker (Apprentice – Journeyman)

 

Alpena Power Company, an investor-owned electric utility serving 17,000 customers in N.E. Michigan, is currently seeking an energetic, results driven candidate for a Lineworker. Journeyman preferred but not required – we will accept Apprentice or Journeyman applicants.

Position Summary:

This position will be responsible for the installation and removal of Transmission, Sub-Transmission, and Distribution line equipment such as poles, crossarms, transformers, cutouts, fuses, arrestors, insulators, conductors, switches, and all other associated line equipment.  Additional responsibilities include operating earth boring and aerial basket machines, winches, trenchers and other machinery used in line work, the installation, removal, and repair of lighting fixtures and associated equipment, and locating and repairing faults on primary or secondary circuits.  Candidates may also be required to operate switches and disconnects, and to patrol lines and make reports on conditions.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of elementary electrical principles as they apply to the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission and distribution systems, and considerable knowledge of the use and care of the tools and equipment used in line work.
  • Ability and sense of security necessary to work aloft.
  • Willingness to participate in and complete the Alpena Power Company Lineworker Apprenticeship Program.
  • Must be physically able to perform essential functions of job with or without reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others.
  • At least 18 years of age, except where a higher age is required by law, and must be employed to learn an apprenticiable occupation.
  • Must possess a high school diploma, General Education Development (GED) equivalent, or other high school equivalency credentials.
    • Applicants must provide an official transcript for high school and any post-high school education.
    • Applicants must submit the GED Certificate or other high school equivalency credentials if applicable.
  • Candidates must possess a valid Class A Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an air brake endorsement.
  • Candidate must have a favorable driving record upon hiring, the ability to maintain it throughout duration of employment; and the ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
