Power Outage

Contact: Ken Dragiewicz President and COO

Beginning just after 6:00 am this morning some Alpena Power Customers began to experience power outages caused by Winter Storm Elliott. At the peak this morning about 750 customers lost power mostly in the French Rd, West Long Lake Rd, Werth Rd and Bear Point areas. The outages were mainly caused by falling trees due to snow, ice and wind and snow/ice buildup on power lines. As of 11:00 am this morning a majority have been restored with about 25 customers still without power. We are anticipating restoring these customers by mid-afternoon but with a significant amount of blizzard conditions still expected more outages are possible.

Alpena Power hopes its customers stay diligent until the storm has passed and continue to follow their emergency plans including:

  • Keep all electronic devices charged. It’s advised to have an emergency battery or charging station available for use during an outage.
  • Have an emergency kit that includes flashlights and extra batteries, water, canned food and blankets. Be prepared with enough medication, baby supplies and pet foods as applicable. A battery-operated radio is also a good idea.

Also keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Stay at least 25 feet away from downed sires and anything they are touching, keep children or pets away, and report the issue by calling 9-1-1 and Alpena Power Company at (989) 358-4900
  • Be alert to crews working along slippery and snow-covered roads. Drivers should slow down or stop and wait for oncoming traffic to clear so they safely go past workers on roadsides.
