Alpena Power offers a Voluntary Green Pricing (VGP) program to allow customers to receive some or all of their energy needs from a renewable energy resource. Traditionally, power is generated by a range of different sources such as coal, natural gas, nuclear, and renewable energy. The VGP program allows customers to determine how much of their energy will come from renewable sources.
What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy is defined as power generated by a resource that is replenished within a human timeframe. In Michigan, renewable energy is primarily generated from wind, solar, water (hydroelectric), woody biomass, municipal waste and landfill gas.
Are customers required to participate in Alpena Power’s VGP program?
No, VGP programs are voluntary. A customer who wishes to participate enters into an agreement with Alpena Power Company.
Who pays for Alpena Power’s VGP program?
Since Alpena Power’s VGP program is voluntary, only program participants will be charged for the cost of the program.
Where does Alpena Power get its renewable energy from for the VGP program?
Due to our size and the size of the VGP program, Alpena Power purchases Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) for all the energy used by the VGP program. The RECs are documented proof of renewable energy that was generated in the State of Michigan.
What are the options and the cost to participate in the VGP program?
Customers can purchase a percentage of their monthly kilowatt-hour (kWh) usage. We offer 25%, 50%, and 100%, or can purchase blocks of 100 kWh. The incremental cost of each kWh purchased through the VGP program is $0.0078/kWh. For example, a customer who uses 1,000 kWh per month and elects the 100% options would pay an additional $7.80 per month to participate in the program.
