In April, 2018, the Michigan Public Service Commission {MPSC) approved a new program for Alpena Power Company (Alpena} which enabled it to begin offering to all of its customers, a Voluntary Green Pricing Program {VGP}.
The program provides its customers with the opportunity to purchase Renewable Energy Credits (REC’s} in an amount of their choosing, that matches a portion of or, up to their entire monthly electric usage. Ownership of the REC’s remain with Alpena but by paying for the REC’s under this program, the customer is ensuring that an amount of electric energy equivalent to their monthly usage totals is being generated from various renewable energy sources within the State of Michigan which could include wind, solar, hydro-electric, biomass, landfill gas, geothermal, solid waste or any other type of renewable energy meeting the requirements of Public Act 295 of 2008.
Under Alpena’s current program, customers select from three options; 25%, 50% or 100% percent of each of their monthly electric usage totals or they purchase a set amount of 100 kWh blocks of electric usage each month. Under each option, the customers pay a VGP surcharge of$ 0.0078 per kWh of monthly usage selected and the surcharge amount is added to their normal monthly bills under the rate category they are taking service from the company under.
Opting into the program requires the customer to stay in the program for a minimum of 12 months, at which time the customer can choose to leave the program or continue on a monthly basis for as long as they wish.
In an effort to gain some insight into our customer’s perception of Alpena’s VGP Program and get your thoughts on how we could make the program appeal to more customers, Alpena is asking for your help by encouraging you to fill out the short survey that follows this information. This survey can be filled out and returned by mail with your monthly bill payment or customers can go online to the company’s website and go into the quick links and open the “Voluntary Green Pricing Survey” link, fill out the survey and click on the “Submit” button.
